About: Teal’s current research activity is situated within the broader area of information environments - that is the way in which we generate, mediate and interpret images and texts located within defined physical or virtual spaces. This includes projects that engage with communication design and its potential for engaging communities and dispelling fear in counter terror; information and urban spaces with a specific focus on 'screens' both large and small; learning and working environments with a particular emphasis on graphic design practice and teaching; as well as the way in which (sub)cultural activity is communicated in the less visible worlds of riot grrrl and punk fanzines. ln all cases, there is an interest underpinning this research which positions the projects within the discipline of graphic design. This also raises issues as to the ways in which we define the role of criticism and the history of graphic design as well as the development of an integrated critical practice. Teal’s work also extends to involvement in raising awareness about women working in design through the Women’s Design + Research Unit (WD+RU).
