About: Sandy researches, writes and lectures on the intersection of fashion and textile design with emerging technology and science in the context of sustainability, for both academic and general audiences, regularly speaking at international conferences and events, and contributing articles and chapters to many publications. Sandy’s career began as a craft maker and knitwear designer, after studying for a maths degree. The Sandy Black fashion knitwear label and knitting yarns business created innovative hand-crafted designs, selling knitwear and do-it-yourself knitting kits to prestigious stores internationally over many years. She went on to direct academic programmes in Fashion and Textiles at University of Brighton and London College of Fashion, where she developed the multi-disciplinary postgraduate programme. Sandy currently supervises PhD research students and develops cross-disciplinary research projects. She is the author of Knitwear in Fashion (2002) and Eco Chic: the fashion paradox (2008) one of the first books to be published on fashion and sustainability. She founded and co-edits the journal Fashion Practice: design, creative process and the fashion industry (Berg).
