Expertise: designing and learning through making, ceramics, ceramic design

About: Kathryn Hearn’s research interests range from the development and production of limited edition ceramic decorative vessels to the use of moulds in a more fluid state, for instance the adaptation of sand casting as a technique to produce large one off ceramic pieces. Other interests include the use of distinctive ceramic bodies in exploring form and surface of decorative ceramics. Often these investigations are undertaken in collaboration with industry partners to interrogate conventions of aesthetics, production and context in the industrial production of ceramics. In collaboration with Wedgwood, for example, Kathryn Hearn explores the potential of the Jasper clay body and challenges its notion as a medium in contemporary ceramics, both as a collectable and core product
